A new case study published by the Commonwealth Fund lays out the lessons learned by the Colorado Beacon Consortium, according to an EHR Intelligence report.
The Colorado Beacon Consortium is one of 17 communities selected by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology through its Beacon Community Program, which aims to demonstrate how strengthening local health IT infrastructure can improve quality and efficiency of healthcare.
The lessons that the CBC learned through its efforts to adopt electronic health records and health information exchange capabilities, according to the case study, are:
1. No factor is more important than physician buy-in for determining a successful adoption.
2. Building support for HIE takes time.
3. Much of EHR and HIE adoption has to do with cultural rather than technical barriers to change.
4. Web-based EHRs are a stepping stone toward full EHR adoption.
5. It is important to establish and communicate expectations and goals.
6. It is important to be honest and transparent with providers and patients regarding health IT adoption.
