Richard A. Kube, MD, of Peoria, Ill.-based Prairie Spine & Pain Institute, published a clinical study's 12-month results focused on sacroiliac joint fusion. Dr. Kube assessed long-term fusion as well as pain reduction in patients receiving Minnetonka, Minn.-based Zyga Technology's SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion.
The study involved 18 patients who received minimally invasive SI joint fusion procedures with decortication and bone grafting.
The Open Orthopaedics Journal published the results.
Here are three takeaways:
1. The study found 88 percent of patients experienced fusion at 12 months.
2. At 12 months, average back pain decreased from 81.7 to 44.1.
3. Dr. Kube noted no device- or procedure-related adverse events through 12 months.
"This technique minimizes the invasiveness of the procedure without compromising any of the orthopedic principles that provide the foundation for a successful fusion," said Dr. Kube.
