Dr. Hamid Abbasi presents 2 OLLIF NASS Summer Meeting: 5 things to know

MIS

Hamid Abbasi, MD, presented two studies on Inspired Spine's Oblique Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion at the North American Spine Society Summer Meeting, held in San Diego from July 26 to 28.

A minimally invasive spinal procedure, OLLIF is associated with lower complication rates and enhanced outcomes compared to the traditional alternative. Surgeons have performed more than 600 OLLIF procedures.

Here are five things to know:

1. The first study analyzed 292 OLLIF procedures for patients with degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, lumbar scoliosis, listhesis and disc herniation.

2. OLLIF decreased surgery time and hospitals stay by more than half as well as reduced blood loss by more than 87 percent.

3. Compared to the open procedure, OLLIF delivered improved patient outcomes.

4. The second study compared 69 OLLIF procedures to 55 open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusions.

5. The study revealed OLLIF patient had a 41.5 percent shorter hospital stay than TLIF patients' length of stay. Length-of-stay costs for OLLIF patients totaled $6,701, compared to $11,583 for TLIF patients. This reflects 42 percent savings for OLLIF postoperative in-patient hospital stays.
