The medical device industry faces some difficult challenges, including new regulations and taxes that could stymie innovation and growth as well as patient safety, according to an
Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation news release.
Yair Holtzman, director of Global Life Sciences at the consulting firm WTP Advisors in White Plains, N.Y., analyzed and discussed the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of the device industry in The U.S. Medical Device Industry in 2012: Challenges at Home and Abroad.
Although U.S.-based medical device companies dominate the industry, there are still several weaknesses, including the FDA review process, a planned excise tax on device makers as part of the healthcare reform law and globalization.
