The Spine Hospital at NewYork-Presbyterian, in partnership with BroadWater's Total Spine Series 2016, will host a live surgery event featuring NuVasive's MAGEC system on Sept. 12.
Here are six highlights:
1. Michael G. Vitale, MD, director of pediatric orthopedics at New York City-based Columbia Orthopedics, will perform surgery on a seven-year-old patient with early onset scoliosis.
2. The patient has a progressive 45 degree curve and multiple cardiac comorbidities.
3. The MAGEC rod is extended non-invasively via a magnet, reducing up to 15 planned distraction surgeries to a single surgery.
4. Surgeons may view the live feed and ask questions in real time.
5. Case discussions and lectures will occur in the afternoon following the live surgery event.
6. Dr. Vitale completed his pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
"The live surgery event will demonstrate that the surgical technique is no different from what surgeons have historically done," said Dr. Vitale. "However, with the elimination of additional planned distraction surgeries, the MAGEC system helps simplify care for this patient population like no other technology."
