Minnetonka, Minn.-based Zyga Technology reported 12-month fusion and clinical results for patients undergoing SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion with decortication.
The SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System involves a minimally invasive procedure for patients with sacroiliac joint disruptions and degenerative sacroiliitis. William Cross, MD, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, presented the study findings at the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Annual Meeting.
Here are five study highlights:
1. The study included 19 patients at three institutions, who received a CT scan 12 months and 24 months after receiving minimally invasive SI joint fusion with decortication and bone grafting.
2. An independent radiology core laboratory analyzed the CT scans for fusion in regards to the joint and area of decortication.
3. The study revealed 74 percent of patients experienced fusion at 12 months. These patients reported a 72 percent decrease in back pain.
4. Of the patients who experienced fusion, 86 percent showed fusion in the area of decortication.
5. Zyga plans to see 24-month results in early 2017.
"For me, it's common sense that SI joint fusion should include decortication and bone grafting to achieve long-term success," said Dr. Cross. "The results of this study provide compelling evidence that decortication and bone grafting may contribute to earlier fusion, and that the procedure provides significant pain relief at one-year postop."
