Surgeons at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem, Israel used Siemens' Artis Zeego and Mazor Robotics' Renaissance Guidance System to perform spine surgery. It was the first time the two robotic technologies have been used in tandem for spine surgery.
Here are five things to know:
1. The three-hour procedure was performed on April 23 to repair a patient's severe spinal fracture.
2. Surgeons used the robots' help to insert 11 pedicle screws into the patient's spine.
3. The Artis Zeego provided real-time 3D imaging throughout the procedure, eliminating the need for pre-surgery CT scans and post-surgery X-rays.
4. The Renaissance Guidance System allowed spinal implant placement with maximum safety and accuracy.
5. Dr. Meir Liebergall of Hadassah Medical Organization's orthopedic department predicted the patient will recover fully and walk again very soon.
