Pushing the kyphoplasty envelope — Q&A with PanMed's VP of Research and Development Jennie Budding

Spinal Tech

Since securing a strong foothold in the spine kyphoplasty market back in 2008, Pan Medical has delivered high quality products meeting patient demand for minimally invasive procedures.

PanMed Vice President of Research and Development Jennie Budding shares insight on the company's InterV kyphoplasty line as well as the launch of its innovative CurvePlus device.

Question: As a leader in catheter, balloon and device creation, how does Pan Medical stay ahead of the curve to deliver the highest quality products?

Jennie Budding: Initially specializing in balloon device creation, Pan Medical has focused on kyphoplasty application in the spine sector since 2008 and has grown to become a globally recognized leader in vertebral compression fracture technology. Its InterV line of kyphoplasty products was initially sold worldwide and later sold in the U.S. making this procedure reasonably available to all.

Q: Significant evidence exists supporting the use of balloon kyphoplasty for treating adult vertebral compression fractures. What sets PanMed's InterV platform apart from other balloon kyphoplasty products?

JB: For the last 20 years, kyphoplasty has been the most common non-invasive procedure in vertebral compression fracture. The PanMed InterV platform with their standard high balloon pressure of 750psi made the kyphoplasty procedure safer with minimal balloon failure incidents and the ability to treat young trauma patients.

Q: With patients demanding minimally invasive procedures, how is PanMed responding through the development of its new products?

JB: PanMed has kept its development of its kyphoplasty range in line with the increasing demand of users for more and more minimally invasive procedures. So, from the initial 10G kyphoplasty catheter, in 2012 Pan Medical launched its 11G kyphoplasty catheter minimizing profile of balloon tools. In 2016 PanMed launched the InterV Micro, the world's smallest 13G kyphoplasty catheter, making the procedure the most atraumatic possible and allowing pain management clinics to have a safer and quicker procedure.

Q: With a presence in the interventional spine, radiology, endoscopy as well as endovascular markets, where do you see the most growth in the coming years? What is coming down the pipeline in the latter half of 2017 for PanMed, such as unveiling your new curved kyphoplasty platform?

JB: Interventional Spine has been our most successful division over the last three years and it continues to be. And we are extremely proud, just a few days ago, to have launched on the kyphoplasty market our CurvePlus device, a revolutionary product in the kyphoplasty arena. A single curved nitinol needle creates a passage for a 13G catheter, deploys the balloon and delivers cement all in one. This provides the simplest, quickest and most complete curved kyphoplasty procedure available.
