Pacific Brain & Spine surgeons 1st in region to receive training in BrightMatter robotic system: 7 insights

Spinal Tech

Lawrence Dickinson, MD; Jeffrey Randall, MD; and Ronnie Mimran, MD, of Pacific Brain and Spine Medical Group in Castro Valley, Calif., are the first neurosurgeons in Northern California to undergo training in the BrightMatter Neurosurgical Robotic System.

Here are seven insights:

1. The BrightMatter system is designed to give neurosurgeons planning, navigation and visualization capabilities for performing the least invasive surgeries for patients.

2. By using BrightMatter, surgeons can plan the safest route to removing deep-seated tumors located within or near white matter tracts of the brain and avoid damaging vital motor functions during procedures.

3. Prior to the surgery, surgeons can use the system to create a 3D model from MRI scans that represents neural tracts and determines the optimal surgical route. Surgeons then import the plan into BrightMatter's optical navigation system which guides surgeons during the actual procedure.

4. Dr. Dickinson noted that tradition surgery planning can take six to 10 hours; however, BrightMatter creates precision mapping integrated with the navigation system in minutes.

5. During surgery, the BrightMatter Robotic Arm gives surgeons an optical video microscope to give surgeons images of the brain without needing to look through a surgical microscope.

6. BrightMatter also works in hand with Brain Path, a tubular retractor that allows surgeons to use a smaller opening to keep brain tissue intact while removing tumors.

7. During spine surgery, BrightMatter reduces the number of dura tears and cerebrospinal fluid leaks. Drs. Randall and Mimran also emphasized the system gave them greater ease than tradition spine surgery.
