Physician signing bonuses, once a treat, are almost a foregone conclusion now as roughly 80 percent of physician recruiting assignments Merritt Hawkins conducted in 2011 and 2012 involved signing bonuses.

The data are from the Merritt Hawkins "2012 Review of Physician Recruiting Incentives," which is based on the 2,710 permanent physician and advanced allied professional search assignments conducted between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2012.

Here are the last eight years of signing bonus usage in physician recruiting.

2011-2012: 80 percent
2010-2011: 76 percent
2009-2010: 76 percent
2008-2009: 85 percent
2007-2008: 74 percent
2006-2007: 72 percent
2005-2006: 58 percent
2004-2005: 46 percent

The average signing bonus in 2011-2012 was $23,338, down slightly from $23,790 in the year before.
