Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute opened in November 2010 through a partnership between Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Calif., and a group of local orthopedic physicians. Now, the hospital has nearly 80 orthopedic surgeons and more than 320 physicians on the medical staff, and is growing. Dereesa Purtell Reid, MBA, CPA, joined Hoag Orthopedic Institute as COO just over a year ago. Here she describes her strategies to drive growth at the hospital and her goals for the end of 2012.
Dereesa Reid went through two major transitions in the past year: She moved 1,200 miles from western Texas to California and also became the COO of Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, Calif. She says both of the transitions went well, and that can be seen in the success that Hoag Orthopedic Institute has found since she took the COO position. The hospital has more than 80 board certified orthopedic surgeons and over 300 physicians on medical staff. It is the largest orthopedic facility on the west coast, performing more than 16,000 orthopedic surgeries throughout Hoag Orthopedic Institute’s facilities, which include a 70 bed hospital and two ambulatory surgery centers.

Ms. Reid shares her experiences moving halfway across the country and sitting at the helm of Hoag Orthopedic Institute with a team of four physician executive leaders.
Hoag Orthopedic Institute has entered into a partnership with McKesson and Aetna to create the first automated implementation of the Integrated Healthcare Association's bundled payment model.
Hoag Orthopedic Institute, a physician-owned orthopedic hospital in Irvine, Calif., opened just in time to meet the deadline set forth by healthcare reform. The idea for Hoag Orthopedic Institute was formulated around three years ago as a for-profit joint venture between a not-for-profit community hospital, Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital, and 35 orthopedic surgeons from two different orthopedic groups. The hospital was built and opened in Nov. 2010, with 51 percent ownership going to the hospital and 49 percent going to the physicians. However, the governance of the institution is 50-50, and it's run by physicians.
