Here are 25 sports medicine updates from the first four months of 2024: 

  1. World Wrestling Entertainment star Braun Strowman underwent spinal fusion surgery for his C4 and C5 vertebrae at Birmingham, Ala.-based Andrews Sports Medicine.
  2. Zimmer Biomet struck a partnership with three of the top pickleball organizations in the U.S., becoming the first and only medical device partner within pickleball. 
  3. Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health have cut the ribbon on a $6.5 million sports medicine and sports performance training facility at the Erie (Pa.) Sports Center.
  4. Former World Wrestling Entertainment and Extreme Championship Wrestling star turned commentator Taz needs a double knee and double shoulder replacement.
  5. Los Angeles Angels player Mike Trout underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.
  6. Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Atlantis Orthopedics and Port St. Lucie-based South Florida Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine announced plans to merge with a May launch.
  7. The U.S. Justice Department settled 139 administrative claims from sexual abuse allegations by former physician and USA Gymnastics official Larry Nassar.

  17. A jury was slated to hear allegations that Penn State removed its team physician, Scott Lynch, MD, nearly five years after the orthopedic surgeon sued the State College, Pa.-based university.
  18. Somverville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham is planning an orthopedics and sports medicine facility in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston.
  19. James Voos, MD, head team physician for the Cleveland Browns and the Jack and Mary Herrick Distinguished Chair of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at University Hospitals in Cleveland, was elected president of the NFL Physicians Society.
