J. Richard Steadman, MD, is the founder and chairman emeritus of The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., and a retired sports medicine orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee injuries and disorders, renowned for developing advanced procedures for the knee, including "the healing response," and the "package," which is a technique shown to restore normal comfortable movement to the arthritic knee.
Dr. Steadman drew attention in the '70s for mobilizing the limb immediately after surgery instead of placing it in a cast. In the 1988, Dr. Steadman created the Steadman Sports Medicine Research Foundation at Lake Tahoe which today is called the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, known for its clinical research database as well as orthopedic injury studies.
Dr. Steadman has won numerous awards including the 2011 Best Essay Award from the American Arthroscopy Association of North America, and was inducted to the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame in Denver.
Dr. Steadman has returned top professional athletes to achievements including 128 from across the NFL, MLB, professional soccer, NBA and snow skiers.
Dr. Steadman received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, before completing an internship and orthopedic residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.
