Joseph Guettler, MD, is heading a clinical trial studying the use of a new tissue implant to treat knee cartilage damage, according to an Oakland Press Business report.
Here are five things to know:
1. Dr. Guettler is an orthopedic surgeon at Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Health System.
2. The NeoCart cartilage tissue implant, is made from the patient's own cartilage cells.
3. Currently, microfracture surgery is considered the standard of care for most cases of knee cartilage injury.
4. The clinical trial will test whether the tissue implant will improve outcomes and recovery time for patients.
5. The Neocart implant is made by Histogenics which is sponsoring the clinical trial. Beaumont Health System is one of 31 clinical trial sites across the country.
