The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York has named Leesa Galatz, MD, system chair of the department of orthopedics.
Here are six things to know:
1. Dr. Galatz currently serves as chief of the shoulder and elbow service at Washington University in St. Louis. She will assume her new position at Mount Sinai in October.
2. Dr. Galatz has a professional interest in traumatic and degenerative disorders of the shoulder and elbow, including rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic surgery and minimally invasive fracture repair.
3. She is also a researcher, focusing on tendon healing and tissue engineering, and has participated in projects funded by the National Institutes of Health.
4. She has won numerous awards over the course of her career, including the 2014 Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughan Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
5. Dr. Galatz is also the associate editor for basic science for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
6. Dr. Galatz completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
