Michael F. Shafer, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon practicing at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. He serves as the program director and professor of orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University. Dr. Schafer specializes in sports medicine as well as diseases and disorders of the spine.
He was the orthopedic consultant for the Chicago Cubs for 30 years. Dr. Shafer is a member of various organizations including the American Medical Association, Scoliosis Research Society, Illinois Medical Society and the American Orthopaedic Association among others.
Dr. Shafer earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City and went on to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University. Dr. Schafer completed a spine surgery fellowship through the National Foundation Traveling Fellowship in Australia and a North American Traveling Fellowship.
