Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Richard Schaefer of Johns Hopkins Medicine

Richard A. Schaefer, MD, MPH, is a practicing orthopedic surgeon and an assistant professor in the orthopedic surgery department at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore. He is a graduate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Leadership Fellows Program and has served on several AAOS committees, including the Public Relations Oversight Group and the Diversity Advisory Board.

Dr. Schaefer served for more than 30 years in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of colonel. He has completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan. He received several military decorations and awards for his service, including the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Badge. He is a member of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He focuses on general orthopedics and musculoskeletal tumors and diseases.

 

Dr. Schaefer completed his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his orthopedic residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colo., and an orthopedic oncology fellowship at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic.
