Thigh muscle strength may predict knee replacement risk in women — 3 points

Orthopedic

An Arthritis & Rheumatology study found examining women's thigh muscle strength can predict their risk of undergoing knee replacement surgery.

Adam G. Culvenor, PhD, from the Paracelsus Medical University in Austria, and colleagues matched Osteoarthritis Initiative study participants who received a knee replacement with control subjects who did not receive a knee replacement in a 1:1 ratio.

Here are three points:

1. Researchers found female patients had significantly lower knee extension strength at time compared to their controls.

2. Researchers saw no significant difference in men.

3. Knee replacement surgery risk was not predicted by thigh muscle strength at two years and four years prior to knee replacement.
