The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics' Patrick Maloney, MD, performed first toe implant operation in the state of Maryland.
Here's what you need to know.
1. Dr. Maloney used the Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage Implant.
Alpharetta, Ga.-based Cartiva recently earned FDA-premarket approval for the implant. Canada, Europe and Brazil have used the implant since 2002.
2. The implant is marketed to arthritis sufferers as an alternative to fusion surgery.
3. The toe implant minimizes the amount of pain experienced without compromising range of motion. The implant has lowered recovery times too. Patients have been able to bear weight on the implant immediately, whereas the recovery time for a fusion procedure is around four to six weeks.
4. Dr. Maloney practices out of the Center for Advanced Orthopaedics' Columbia, Md.-based office.
