A study in Journal of Arthroplasty investigated the outcomes of patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty at a single ambulatory surgery center.
The researchers identified 549 outpatient patients total hip arthroplasty patients at an independent ASC. They considered the patients' demographic characteristics and 90-day complication rates.

1. The average patient age was 54.4 years and the average American Society of Anesthesiologists score was 1.6.
2. Four of the patients were later admitted to a local hospital.
3. One patient was admitted for pain control, one patient was admitted for an acetabular component migration; one patient was admitted for hypotension, bradycardia, and an acute polyarthralgia exacerbation; and one patient was admitted for oversedation secondary to narcotics.
The researchers concluded, "Outpatient THA at an ASC is safe and effective when performed on the appropriately indicated patient."
