Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Valerae O. Lewis of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Valerie O. Lewis, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

After serving as a faculty member at MD Anderson for 15 years, Dr. Lewis was named chair of the orthopaedic oncology department in 2015, making her the first woman to lead an orthopaedic department at a freestanding cancer center and at any of the University of Texas schools. Much of her work has focused on surgical management of pelvic sarcoma and limb salvage in pediatric patients.

 

Dr. Lewis conducts complex research on gene functions and their relationship to osteosarcoma after being influenced by medication. Her papers have been published in many peer-reviewed journals, and she has worked with the AAOS and the MSTS to shape educational standards and opportunities for U.S.-based orthopedic surgeons.

 

After graduating from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Dr. Lewis remained in the area to complete her residency through the Harvard combined orthopaedic residency program. Afterwards, she completed a muscoskeletal oncology fellowship at The University of Chicago.
