From surgical to fine art — Dr. William Aaron Tucker repurposes broken surgical instruments

Orthopedic

Corpus Christi, Texas-based Spohn Physicians Group orthopedic surgeon William Aaron Tucker, DO, is taking his broken and used instruments and turning them into something beautiful, KrisTV reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Dr. Tucker takes old instruments and turns them into art.

2. He became fascinated with the instruments after his orthopedic surgery internship. He said to KrisTV that he thought the instruments were beautiful, while displaying a sense of function.

3. Dr. Tucker began collecting surgical instruments for reference while writing a paper. After the paper, he couldn't throw the instruments away. He repurposed them into nameplates for colleagues which led to him creating sculptures for family members.

4. After a recommendation from his wife, his art career took off. His work hangs in his home, his office and in several family members' homes. He said art is his way of relaxing, but also a method of introspection.

"This is just another way of giving something that was thrown away another life… that's kind of the way I look at it. … I call it orthopedic junk art," Dr. Tucker said.
