Michael Kuhn, MD, of Orthopedic Associates of Middletown performed the first outpatient MACI knee cartilage procedure in Connecticut at the Middlesex Center for Advanced Orthopedic Surgery in Middletown, according to Zip 06.
Here are five things to know:
1. The procedure requires a surgeon to harvest a small sample of cartilage cells from the patient's knee in an arthroscopic procedure and impregnate them on a mesh collagen membrane and re-implant them into the patient's knee to fix the defect.
2. The outpatient procedure is approved by the FDA and allows patients to begin rehabilitation immediately.
3. Dr. Kuhn specializes in arthroscopic surgery, cartilage restoration and meniscal transplantation.
4. The Middlesex Center for Advanced Orthopedic Surgery hosts orthopedic, sports medicine, spine surgery and pain management procedures. The center is AAAHC-accredited and Medicare-certified.
5. Twelve surgeons have ownership in Middlesex Center for Advanced Orthopedic Surgery through Orthos Holding Company; the remaining 50 percent ownership is held by Middlesex Hospital.
