The measure would establish mandatory online reporting of prescriptions when they are filled by pharmacists, and would require physicians to check a patient's database history before prescribing painkillers. Kentucky passed a similar law earlier this year.
Under New York's current system, pharmacists are required to report prescriptions within 45 days, and reporting by physicians is voluntary. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the state hopes to have the regulations established by the end of the year, with the database up and running in 2013.
