AAPM calls REMS a "huge leap forward" and says they are pleased to have worked with the FDA and other groups on the strategy development.
"Through proper education and training, opioids can be administered safely to patients and continue to be an important option in the treatment of chronic and debilitating pain that is suffered by millions of Americans," says the statement.
The organization plans to release a list of best practices for patients and perscribers to reduce adverse outcomes associated with opioids.

The American Academy of Pain Medicine has announced its support for the Food and Drug Administration's issuance of the Risk Evaluation Mitigation Strategy for opioids.
