Eugene Lipov, MD, founder of The Advanced Pain Centers in Hoffman Estates and Oak Brook, Ill., has completed one of the world's first studies on neck pain treatment using subcutaneous electrical stimulation. Working with Medtronic, Dr. Lipov conducted a study to help the 4 percent of adults who have actively impairing neck pain that's often beyond treatment. Patients underwent a weeklong trial with electrical currents used to stimulate the brain's peripheral nerves and replace pain signals.
So far, the stimulators have helped eight out of 10 patients, though long term results are not yet known.
