J. Abbott Byrd III, MD, is a spine surgeon at Virginia Beach, Va.-based Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists. He is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society and the North American Spinal Society. He has previously served served as chief of spinal surgery in the department of orthopedic surgery West Virginia University in Morgantown.
Dr. Byrd is board certified and specializes in the treatment of both pediatric and adult patients with complex spinal problems, including degenerative and herniated lumbar and cervical disc disease, scoliosis, kyphosis, as well as tumors and trauma of the spine. He also performs spinal stenosis, spinal tumor surgery and spinal fusion surgery.
Dr. Byrd has an interest in spinal implant development and holds numerous patents on implant devices. He developed the Synergy Spinal Systems which are distributed worldwide to help patients with spinal problems.
Dr. Byrd earned his medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University School Of Medicine in Richmond. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. and completed a spine surgery fellowship at Twin Cities Scoliosis Center in Minneapolis.
