Todd Albert, MD, is the Richard H. Rothman Professor and chairman of the department of orthopedics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals as well as president of the Rothman Institute, both based in Philadelphia. He also serves as co-director of reconstructive spine service and the spine fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals. He serves as the chair of the Development Committee for the American Orthopaedic Association, is on the board of directors of the Scoliosis Research Society and is a past president of the Cervical Spine Research Society.
Dr. Albert focuses on diseases of the cervical spine and a wide array of medical conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis, kyphosis, herniated discs, scoliosis and spinal cord injuries. He is a member of the Scoliosis Research Society, International Society for Study of the Lumbar Spine and North American Spine Society. He is deputy editor of The Spinal Deformity Journal and an associate editor for Spine. He is actively involved in research and has served as the site principal investigator of a spine patient outcomes research trial that received funding from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Research.
"Leadership of a big organization requires transparency and an open dialogue from top to bottom. Leaders need to be transparent in their decision-making as fewer problems seem to develop when there is open dialogue," says Dr. Albert. "Spine surgeon leaders also need to embark on research to see if what we are doing is correct and if it is working. If it isn't working then we need to be honest about it."
Dr. Albert earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He has also completed a spine surgery fellowship at Minnesota Spine Center in Minneapolis.
