Letter to the Editor: Consider Patient Specific Cutting Guides Carefully
This is a letter to the editor written by Walter P. Spires, Jr., CEO, ANOVA Orthopaedic Solutions.
One of our responsibilities as a committed orthopedic implant supply partner is to help keep you informed on developments deemed important to facilities, surgeons, and patients. The subject of patient specific cutting guides is one of those. Beginning in earnest at the 2010 AAOS meeting, the large orthopedic companies began touting them as the latest in technology and technique advancement for total knees. Information is front and center on web pages and blogs. Use of these guides is also touted by a number of well-known surgeons, some of whom are also paid consultants to the companies. That is a matter of record, not a criticism.
