Thomas Schuler, MD, chief executive and spine surgeon at the Virginia Spine Institute in Reston, performed a hybrid multi-level cervical artificial disc replacement with spinal fusion, one of the first in the country. The procedure treats degenerative disc disease and herniated discs with normal discs interspersed. Advantages include increased function and motion preservation, decreased stress on healthy discs and reduced damage to nearby discs and joints.
Dr. Schuler performed the procedure at Reston Hospital Center using the FDA-approved Bryan cervical artificial disc.
