Encouraging Surgeon & Administrator Collaboration: Dr. John Pracyk and Patrick Vega

Spine

On April 2,Principal of Vega Healthcare Patrick Vega and Director of the Center of Brain and Spine Health at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, Wis., John Pracyk, MD, will give a presentation titled "A New Model of Physician Leadership, Engaging and Maximizing Collaboration" as part of the ISASS13 Pre-Course. "For good reason, many physicians distrust hospitals fearing that administration will dominate the relationship and capriciously withhold resources," said Mr. Vega in an ISASS report. "These fears must be addressed with clear communication, tangible action, transparency and an operating framework that benefit physicians as well as the hospital. In the most successful health systems, administration actively seeks physician participation in service line development and management of clinical, financial and business development matters with decisions based on shared vision and values."

Physicians must also make a commitment to the collaboration.

"Physicians must move beyond their comfort zone, take accountability and make a commitment to collaborate, especially in situations where they don't control every variable. Hospital/physician collaboration can be compared to dating, engagement and marriage: lasting relationships are preceded by commitment," said Dr. Pracyk in the report.
