Researchers led by Yong Ahn, MD, at Worridul Spine Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, recently published a study in Spine on the amount of radiation absorbed by spinal surgeons during percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy procedures. The study found that surgeons could perform only 219 lumbar spinal discectomies a year without a lead apron before passing the allowable amount of radiation exposure. Surgeons using a lead apron would be able to safely perform 5,379 procedures in a year.
