Seventy-one percent of physicians believe the promise of reduced costs resulting from increased use of health IT is inflated and that HIT will actually end up costing more. The survey also found 73 percent of all physicians believe that health IT will improve the quality of care provided in the longer term.
Orthofix's gross profit down 17% in Q1.
Lewisville, Texas-based Orthofix International's gross profits dipped in the first quarter, down 17 percent from 2012's first quarter due to substantial declines in spine and orthopedic implant sales. Orthofix's product sales also suffered, down 15 percent from $104.8 million in 2012 to $88.4 million this past quarter.
MUMC to participate in spinal stenosis treatment clinical trial.
The Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga., has joined a clinical trial examining the efficacy of facet joint replacement as a treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis. The trial will focus on the ACADIA Facet Replacement System, which is designed to be an alternative to spinal fusion.
Mission Health launched Mission Spine & Back Pain Center.
Mission Health, Asheville, N.C.-based health system, announced the opening of Mission Spine & Back Pain Center in Asheville.
Drs. Malini Narayanan, Charles Winters & Said Osman joined American Spine.
American Spine announced that Malini Narayanan, MD, Charles Winters, MD, and Said Osman, MD, will begin practicing at its Waldorf, Md., location.
Zimmer announced job cuts.
Warsaw, Ind.-based Zimmer Holdings plans to cut jobs from its workforce. Zimmer did not disclose the number of layoffs, but said less than 50 employees will be impacted across all functions and operations.
