Study: 7 Challenges of Treating Spine Trauma in Obese Patients

Spine

In a study recently published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, researchers examined complications surrounding the treatment of spine trauma in morbidly obese patients.   Six patients, each weighing 265 pounds or more, underwent surgery for spine trauma. Researchers observed the patients and their treatment over the course of two years.

Challenges spine surgeons face in treating obese patients include:
•    Patient positioning
•    Surgical access
•    Anatomical level confirmation
•    Having sufficient instrument length
•    Postoperative care
•    Wound healing
•    Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis
