The study concluded that while early improvement in stroke victims can be the result of spontaneous repairs and reduced brain swelling, later progression occurs due to the regeneration of spinal cord nerve cells.

Leesburg, Va.-based K2M launched its MESA small stature spinal system for Australian, New Zealand and European markets. The system features a 4.5 mm pedicle screw, a low profile alternative for use on small stature spines.
North American Clinical Trials Network received $2M DoD grant.
The Department of Defense awarded the North American Clinical Trials Network of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation a $2 million grant for research on the treatment of spinal cord injuries. The funding will support Phase 2 and 3 trials of the drug Riluzole, an FDA-approved neuroprotective drug. Riluzole is designed to limit spinal cord damage.

The North American Spine Society released a short documentary with a "behind-the-scenes" look at advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill. The documentary covers NASS Fly-ins for members across the country to meet with their representatives and features several congressional representatives discussing the importance of political participation for spine surgeons and specialists.

Mazor Robotics' gross profit for the first quarter more than doubled from $1.9 million in 2012 to $4 million in the three month period ending March 31. The increase is due to double the demand for Mazor's Renaissance spine system — six units sold in the first quarter of 2013 compared to three units in 2012.
