On Tuesday, June 19, Christopher R. Good, MD, a spinal specialist from the Virginia Spine Institute in Reston, Va., performed the first sacroiliac fusion surgery guided by a robot on a patient.
The robot used in the operation is a Mazor Robotics Renaissance, which is manufactured by Mazor Robotics.
Dr. Good performed the robot-guided surgery after all non-operative avenues for the patient's severe sacroiliitis were exhausted.
"Robot-assisted surgery helps make surgery safer, and I am very excited to apply this technology to patients suffering with sacroiliitis," said Dr. Good in a Virginia Spine Institute news release.
Dr. Good has seven years of experience performing robot assisted surgery, and just last year he performed the first robot-assisted thoracic fusion at HCA Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Va.
