Studies showed Infuse may not be better for spinal fusion.
The newest issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine contains two studies evaluating the safety and effectiveness of Medtronic's recombinant human bone morphogenic protein product, Infuse, in spinal fusion surgery. Both studies concluded that while Infuse is comparably effective to an iliac crest bone graft, it is correlated with adverse outcomes such as little pain reduction and cancer at higher rates post-surgery.
SpineGuard was issued patent for PediGuard pedicle screw with built-in sensor.
SpineGuard received a patent for its "smart screw" concept where the PediGuard sensor is implanted on the tip of a pedicle screw. The now-patented design allows for a quicker surgical flow and more accurate placement of the pedicle screw.
Aesculap released CeSpace interbody ACDF system.
Center Valley, Pa.-based Aesculap Implant Systems introduced its CeSpace Interbody System for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedures.
Virginia Spine Institute hosted first robot-guided sacroiliac fusion surgery in North America.
Christopher R. Good, MD, a spinal specialist from the Virginia Spine Institute in Reston, Va., performed the first sacroiliac fusion surgery guided by a robot on a patient. The robot used in the operation is a Renaissance spine system, which is manufactured by Mazor Robotics.
Jury sided with DePuy-Synthes in $16M patent infringement ruling against Globus.
A Delaware jury handed down a $16 million favorable judgment to Johnson & Johnson's DePuy-Synthes in its patent infringement suit against Globus Medical. A jury ruled that Globus infringed on three J&J patents for spinal implants. The $16 million in damages was factored based on a 15 percent royalty rate for approximately $107 million in Globus sales from the devices.
Aurora Spine named Richard Moss VP of international business development.
Aurora Spine appointed Richard Moss as its vice president of international business development. Since 2009, Mr. Moss has been the vice president of international sales at Doctors Research Group, and he previously served as TranS1's director of sales where he worked with minimally invasive procedures for treatment of lower back pain.
