Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston named James D. Kang, MD, as chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery.
Here are six key facts:
1. Dr. Kang most recently served as the executive vice chairman for clinical services, Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery, as well as director of Ferguson Laboratory Musculoskeletal Research Center for Spine Research at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
2. He also served as a tenured professor of orthopedic and neurological surgery and a professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
3. Earlier this year, he was named president of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and will serve for a one-year term.
4. His research interests include the biochemistry of disc degeneration, gene therapy application to disc degeneration and biomechanics of the spine.
5. In 2012, he received the ISSLS Prize for Basic Science Research.
6. Dr. Kang has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications and over 50 book chapters. He is also the deputy editor of Spine.
