Dr. Steven Falowski performs St. Luke's University Health Network's 1st live stream neurosurgery: 5 things to know

Spine

Steven Falowski, MD, performed the first live feed neurosurgery at St. Luke's University Health Network, according to a News Medical report.

He partnered with Medtronic to perform the neuromodulation procedure. Here are five things to know:

1. Dr. Falowski performed a neurosurgical procedure to implant spinal cord stimulators, deep brain stimulators and pain pumps for a live feed to Medtronic engineers so they can see how the products are used in real time.

2. The engineers can ask questions for further modifications to future devices that would make the procedure better and more efficient.

3. Dr. Falowski has a longstanding relationship with Medtronic and has collaborated on technical innovation in the past. He has more than 150 neurostimulator implants annually and 50 deep brain stimulators last year.

4. The patients operated on during the streamed procedures are anonymous and only the operative field is recorded.

5. There is potential for future partnerships to film procedures with other devices as well.
