Rush Medical uses stem cells to repair spinal cords in clinical trial: 5 observations

Researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago discover a new way to repair injured spinal cords, according to a Softpedia article.

Here are five observations:

 

1. The researchers also found how to partially restore motor and sensory function.

 

2. Richard G. Fessler, MD, PhD, led the study because there are no therapies for damaged spine nerves.

 

3. Dr. Fessler and his team are studying how to use stem cells to repair spinal cord injuries within a 14 to 30 day timeframe following the injury. The stem cells could also help restore some nerve function.

 

4. The stem cells are placed onto the injury site.

 

5. One patient received the treatment already, and the researchers are hopeful.
