Kapil Moza, MD, a neurosurgeon at Thousand Oaks, Calif., was the first neurosurgeon in his area to complete a cervical artificial disc replacement in 2007 and has implanted 10 more since then without complications, according to a MD News report.

The artificial disc is inserted between the vertebrae to replace a natural spinal disc and is designed to preserve mobility and maintain flexibility. The procedure is an alternative to spinal fusions.

Dr. Mosa takes imaging tests and physical exams to pinpoint the patient's diagnosis. He recommends physical therapy and pain management for the patients before recommending surgery. He works closely with Medtronic to develop several different products, including products for minimally invasive spine surgery.

"This is an exciting time for spine surgery," Dr. Moza said in the report. "There is a move to restoring physiological function. Artificial disc replacement is one example of this."
