Spine surgeon and Philadelphia-based Rothman Institute President Alexander Vaccaro, MD, PhD, MBA, was featured in an interview in Philadelphia Style magazine.
Dr. Vaccaro discussed his dual roles as a spine surgeon, practice president and editor-in-chief of The Journal of Spinal Disorders and Techniques; he also holds leadership positions with Thomas Jefferson Hospitals and has been involved in leadership roles with major professional societies. Between juggling clinical responsibilities with spine society and meetings across the globe, he also found time to plan strategically for the future.
Here are five key notes on Rothman's growth and where it's headed in the future:
1. Expand with new locations in North Jersey and new areas of Pennsylvania; the practice currently has more than 20 locations.
2. Incorporate telemedicine into the practice, allowing patients face-to-face time with physicians through a television or tablet.
3. Building the foundation for a spine hospital in conjunction with Jefferson Hospital.
4. Care for four major sports teams in Philadelphia, among the first providers in the United States to partner with four major sports teams in the same city, according to the report.
5. Continue gathering patient input to drive the future of the practice, including through social media and email questionnaires.
"You have to respond to how healthcare is changing but it's really about listening to people and finding out exactly what they need," said Dr. Vaccaro in the report.
