56% of physicians recruited to hospital settings in 2015; 32% to private practice

North America dominates global spine surgery devices market
The increasing geriatric population and competitive pricing will spur the global spine surgery devices market's growth, based on a Transparency Market Research report. Asia Pacific will experience the most rapid growth rate due to a high population density and greater disposable incomes.

 

Implanet receives FDA, CE Mark approval for JAZZ Lock
Bordeaux, France-based Implanet received FDA clearance and CE mark for its Jazz Lock implant. The Jazz Lock is designed for degenerative spinal disorder surgery and is based on the polyester sublaminar braid platform.

 

University of Chicago Medicine to open new orthopedic center
University of Chicago Medicine will open its new orthopedic center in Orland Park, Ill., on April 6. Twenty-eight UChicago Medicine employees, including 20 physicians, will staff the clinic. The facility will include orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, hand surgeons, spinal surgeons, general orthopedic physicians and advanced practice nurses.

 

Interventional Spine to launch new line of Opticage Lumbar Fusion device
Interventional Spine plans to launch a new line of Opticage Lumbar Fusion implant products. The new line will include recent size additions to the Opticage Lumbar Fusion line of products, as well as lordotic versions of the interbody device.

 

AAMC increases estimate of physician shortage
The United States faces a shortage of physicians ranging between 61,700 and 94,700 over the next decade, according to a new report from the American Association of Medical Colleges. This report updates a 2015 projection that estimated the nation would need between 46,100 and 90,400 physicians by 2025, though it is still below a 2010 estimate that projected a shortage of 130,600 physicians by 2025.

 

Aging decreases ability to regenerate after SCI
University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Vancouver-based University of British Columbia researchers studied the connection between spinal cord regeneration and aging. Deleting Pten from the neurons of older mice promoted post-injury cellular responses that usually lead to regeneration. But, the axons were not able to regenerate past the injury site in older mice.

 

Office-based single-specialty orthopedic practices boast highest compensation
The Medscape Orthopedist Compensation Report 2016 shows single-specialty groups provide the highest compensation of $489,000 for orthopedists. Office-based multispecialty group practices ranked second with compensation of $470,000. Average outpatient clinic compensation was $155,000.
