Vanderbilt surgeons help perform Australia's 1st in-utero spinal surgery: 5 highlights

Brisbane, Australia-based Mater Hospital and Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center surgeons successfully performed Australia's first in-utero spinal surgery, according to ABC News.

Here are five highlights:

 

1. The 24-week-old baby was diagnosed with spina bifida.

 

2. About 40 members composed the team of surgeons and nurses performing the in-utero surgery.

 

3. Surgeons may only perform the procedure when the pregnancy is between 22 weeks and 25 weeks.

 

4. The in-utero procedure is considered high-risk.

 

5. Spina bifida impacts about one in 2,000 pregnancies in Australia, according to ABC News.
