Lawsuits against fugitive neurosurgeon Dr. Allen Sossan settled

More than three dozen lawsuits against fugitive neurosurgeon Allen Sossan, MD, have been settled, according to the Argus Leader.

The lawsuits were filed in 2015 against Dr. Sossan and two South Dakota-based hospitals where he performed surgery between 2008 and 2012. He was accused of performing unnecessary procedures that maimed patients, and in some cases the patients died. Former employees also accused him of billing fraud.

Dr. Sossan practiced in Nebraska, where his privileges were terminated or rescinded, before moving to South Dakota, where his privileges were also suspended.

He was later accused of lying on his medical license and fled to Iran in 2015.. The lawsuits have been settled for an undisclosed amount.
