The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine has released a new position statement on concussions in sports to make recommendations to healthcare professionals for a more individualized approach to diagnosing and managing concussions. Ten contributing authors to the report were led by Kimberly Harmon, MD, associate head team physician for the University of Washington and former AMSSM president. She stressed the importance of a close relationship between the athlete and reviewer after the concussion.
The statement provides framework for team physicians to evaluate and manage sports-related concussions and covers topics such as risk factors, neuropsychological testing, return to play and concussion legislation.
