A study recently published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery examined 23,400 Oxford unicondylar knee replacements to treat osteoarthritis at 366 centers performed by 919 surgeons. The study reported:
• Revision rate for the lowest volume centers — 50 or fewer procedures during the eight-year study period — was 1.62 revisions per 100 component years;
• Revision rate for high volume centers — more than 400 procedures over the eight-year study period — was 1.16 per 100 component years;
• Five-year implant survival rate was 92.3 percent in low volume centers;
• Five-year implant survival rate for high volume centers was 94.1 percent;
• Revision rate for surgeons in centers performing 25 or fewer procedures during the eight-year study period was 2.16 revisions per 100 component years;
• Surgeons who performed more than 200 procedures during the eight-year study period reported 0.8 revisions per 100 component years.
• Five-year survival rate for centers performing 25 or fewer procedures during the eight-year study period was 90.1 percent;
• Highest-volume surgeons reported 96 percent five year implant survival rate.
