MRI Visualization of Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants After Arthroplasty: 3 Statistics

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

In a recent study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, researchers from the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York, used magnetic resonance imaging to examine adverse synovial responses in patients after receiving metal-on-metal hip implants after arthroplasty.   The study divided 74 hips in 69 patients into an asymptomatic group, symptomatic group and unexplained pain group. Using MRI, the volume of synovitis was measured in each patient.

The study found synovitis in:
•    78 percent of hips with unexplained pain
•    75 percent of hips in the symptomatic group
•    68 percent of hips in the asymptomatic group
