How Many Orthopedic Surgeons Are in Private Practice?

Around 71 percent of orthopedic surgeones are in private practice, according to the 2012 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons census report.

 

Around 44 percent of the orthopedic surgeon respondents were in a private practice orthopedic group. Another 18 percent reported being private practice solo practitioners. The last 9 percent reported practicing in a multispecialty group.

 

The number of orthopedic surgeons reporting hospital employment rose by 1 percent from 2010 to 2012, to 9 percent. Another 9 percent reported a salary from an academic institution and 2 percent reported salary from HMO.
