9 Statistics on Orthopedic Surgeon Occupational Injury

In a recent study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, researchers from the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute Center for Health Policy in Nashville, Tenn., examined the occurrence and impact of occupational injury among orthopedic surgeons.

The study included 140 orthopedic surgeons, including surgeons from all orthopedic subspecialties.

 

The study found:
•    44 percent of the surgeons had one or more work-related injury during their career
•    38 percent reported that they did not have access to institutional resources to support their recovery
•    25 percent reported hand injury
•    19 percent reported lower back injury
•    10 percent reported neck injury
•    7 percent reported shoulder injury
•    6 percent reported injury to another area
•    10 percent reported missing work as a result of injury
•    4 percent reported missing at least three weeks
